Oil Change and General Service

  • Gather Necessary Supplies: Before starting, gather the necessary supplies, including the appropriate type and quantity of engine oil, a new oil filter, a wrench or socket set, a drain pan, a funnel, and gloves.
  • Park on a Level Surface: Park your vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake. Ensure the engine is cool to avoid burns from hot components.
  • Locate and Access the Oil Drain Plug and Filter: Position the drain pan under the engine oil drain plug, usually located on the bottom of the engine oil pan. Use a wrench or socket to loosen the drain plug and allow the old oil to drain into the pan. Locate the oil filter, which may be on the side or bottom of the engine, and prepare to remove it.
  • Drain the Old Oil: Once the old oil has drained completely, reinstall the drain plug securely. Be sure to replace any crush washers or gaskets if necessary.
  • Replace the Oil Filter: Remove the old oil filter by turning it counterclockwise using an oil filter wrench or by hand if accessible. Before installing the new oil filter, lightly coat the rubber gasket with clean engine oil to ensure a proper seal. Screw on the new oil filter by hand until it’s snug, then tighten it an additional 3/4 to 1 turn.
  • Refill with Fresh Oil: Use a funnel to add the appropriate amount and type of fresh engine oil to the engine. Refer to your vehicle’s owner’s manual for the correct oil viscosity and capacity. Avoid overfilling the engine by checking the oil level using the dipstick and adding oil as needed.
  • Check Other Fluid Levels: While you’re under the hood, take the opportunity to check other fluid levels, including coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Top off any fluids that are low, and inspect for signs of leaks or contamination.
  • Inspect Belts and Hoses: Visually inspect engine belts and hoses for signs of wear, cracking, or damage. Replace any worn or damaged belts or hoses to prevent unexpected failures.
  • Check Air Filter: Remove the air filter and inspect it for dirt, debris, or damage. Clean or replace the air filter if necessary to ensure proper engine airflow and performance.
  • Inspect Battery: Check the battery terminals and connections for corrosion, and ensure they are tight and secure. Clean any corrosion using a mixture of baking soda and water, and consider applying battery terminal grease to prevent future corrosion.
